Last week we debated whether the craze for fidget spinner toys was a good thing and whether it really helped people focus and concentrate at school or not. We found out about different opinions from the USA and UK, from teachers and parents, and decided there were alternatives which could do the job just as well or even better. We will be selling our alternatives at the School Fair.

We attempted to make our own homemade spinners with cardboard and coins, and lego. Some of them worked quite well. We designed some amazing fidget toys that combined lots of different sensory elements.

This week we used another craze - bottle flipping - to think about probability and chance, what makes a fair test and the variables you can adjust to try to make good comparisons. We predicted and hypothesised what we thought the outcomes would be and explained why we thought as we did. We will go on to work out the fraction of the attempts that were successful under each set of variables, and convert this to decimals and percentages.

hi class 6 i enjoyed the bottle flipping out in the sunny weather. We did lots of experiments i was in a group with Declan Jake Lauren Paige Darby Cameron and myself we had to go into twos and threes i was in a three with Cameron and Darby.First we had to try and flip a bottle on a chair we had to do it whilst standing up. To make it fair we all stood up and filled the bottles with water and we had to make it even we all put the chairs the right way around and in line. We had to record our flips onto a sheet and did tally marks there was a yes box and a no box when you didnt land it up on end you had to put a tally mark in the no box and if we did land it we would put a tally mark in the yes box. Me and Cameron fliped it three times and Darby flipped it once. Then we had to flip it whilst standing then kneeling then sitting we thought that the standing would be the easiest and it was all though we only did it once then we did who could flip it the furthest and then the highest. It was great fun i wish we could do it again sometime.Jennifer

ReplyDeleteWe did a debate on whether the fidget spinners where good or bad. Aiden chose the fidget spinners should be allowed side and Cameron chose the opposite. We also did some maths on water bottle flipping we made estimates and predictions on challenges and experiments. Aiden Cameron

ReplyDeleteIt was very fun and intresting doing the spinning and flipping we did spinning a week before flipping the task was to build a figet spinner out of lego or cardboard we tested them after everyone was done. This week we did flipping there was four groups with sixs and sevens we had a warm up to see how much times you could flip it in twenty shots ten on each hand then our test was to see if it matters what it has in it we had lentils, water, popcorn and sand we estimated that the water would flip the most in twenty attemps and we found out that we were right.Erlend.B Brogan.R

ReplyDeleteHi Class 6 yesterday we experimented the probability of flipping a bottle and landing it. We were in a group with Jennifer, Paige, Declan, Jake and Cameron. our warm up challenge was to flip the bottle on a chair and see how many times we can land it. Then we tested if it was easier standing, kneeling or sitting. All the groups got different scores. Lauren and Darby

ReplyDeleteon Tuesday we did bottle flipping our group was me,Robert,Ryan,Erin.k,Sofia,Erin.r and daisy are first experiment was to cap the bottle with it full up the top we did 20 each in total 140 and we never landed it.For are second experiment we had different bottles but with the same amount of water and we did 20 with each bottle and we landed it 1 time .the weather was good so it made it better.William and Robert

ReplyDeleteYesterday near the end of the afternoon we went outside to work out the probability of water bottle flips. We had bottle flipping warm ups and then afterwards we had a set task. It was quite challenging to work out the probability of the bottle flipping or in our case capping. Each group had a different set task including filling bottles with other substances and landing bottles on different objects. I hope everyone enjoyed it we know we did. Sofia and Erin R bye :)

ReplyDeleteYesterday we did experiments with water bottles. Everyone split into 4 different group 1's first experiment was to flip a water bottles into a plant pot.Group 2's first experiment was to flip it and land on its cap. Group 3's first experiment was to flip a water bottle ten times with your left hand then ten times with your right hand. Then at the end of all the experiments had to be fair. Then we looked at the results. We made it fair by everyone one having the same amount of water in there groups. Everyone the same distance from there chair and in the same position. We hope we do something like this in the future.

Hi class 6 yestrerday we did a water bottle flipping experiment and last week we debated on the craze of fidget spinners. We did an experiment on water bottle flipping. we were split into 4 groups we each had some water bottles and two different experiments. We each had a warm up experiment which was either flip a bottle 10 times with youre right had then your left or trying to cap your water bottle (flipping it and landing it on its cap) There was also fliping youre water bottle onto a chair or into a cup. Then for our main experiment we either had four diferent bottles with the same amount of water and see which one fliped the best. There was also the same 4 bottles and in each one there was somthing different (water, sand, popcorn and lentils) and again you see wich one flipped the best. Another experiment was the same for bottles with different amounts of water and yet again we were seeing which one flipped the best. The final one was flipping it either standing kneeling or sitting and of course we were seeing wich one flipped the best. Moving on from that last week we debated over the craze of fidget spinners. There was two sides one was saying either they should be band or used only with in certain times while the other was debating that they should be used anytime by anyone. We debated for a while but still there was no clear winner. Even though these are 2 completly different activities each one is as fun as the other and we hope we get to do somthing like these again soon. Daisy and Cierra

ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday class six did a little project on figit toys first we tryed to make our oan figit spinners out of lego some of them were very good and could spin for a long time Jack and Jake

ReplyDeleteon the 16th of may we did water bottle flipping to learn about proability we were split into 4 groups. We each had different experiments my group did a where we had to see if it made a difference and it did water was the most affective. Kadyn also did one it was seeing if it made a difference if you put different amounts in it did as well a quarter did the best.

Hi everyone yesterday it was really fun doing water bottle flipping. In my group was Aiden Kadyn Aniesha Scott Tyler and me we were group one our experiment was to flip a bottle into a plastic plant pot, Aniesha got 6/20 flips, Tyler got 9/20, Aiden got 6/20, Scott got 4/20 and I got 1/20. It was still fun the experiment then our next challenge was to predicted what amount would land the most times it was fun doing it bottle A was one 4th it got 6 landed flips B was one half it got 0 C was three 4th's it got 2 D was one fool bottle it got 0, so in that bottle A was more successful. Hope we can do it again. Kaylen

ReplyDeleteon Monday we did a thing on probability first we went out side and filled bottles with different things and guessed witch one would flip the most it was great fun Jack and Jake

ReplyDeleteHi class 6 one day we made fidget spinner's out of Lego and cardboard. the Lego fidget spinner's were harder to make because there wasn't a lot of Lego pieces that weren't useful for making fidget spinner's. the cardboard fidget spinner's were a lot easier because there was a whole piece of cardboard to cut out a fidget spinner but it was hard to make bearings. with the cardboard fidget spinner's we used pins to put in the middle to hold it

Hi class 6,

ReplyDeleteyesterday we did bottle flipping we were all in different groups we started with a warm up group 1 did water bottle flipping into a pot group 2 did water bottle capping group 3 did flipping the bottle 10 times on the right hand and 10 times on the left and group 4 did water bottle flipping onto a chair. After the warm up we did the real test group 1 did different amount of water in the bottles, group 2 did water bottle flipping with different water bottles, group 3 put different things inside the water bottles and group 4 tried to sit and stand while flipping. We had a lot of fun doing this and we've also learned lots about predicting. We also did a debate weather fidget spinners should be allowed in class and help concentration or if they are a distraction and not allowed in class. We also had a lot of fun doing this and also learnt lots.
